Show Reel Examples and Evaluation

A show reel is a short video containing someone's work to show to potential future employers as a more visual portfolio, with the contents of the video being those of photography pieces, solo or group video projects and other pieces of content they were involved in.

Examples -

A good example of a show reel is from a 23 year old names Joshua James Vicente, who is based multi-disciplinary creative specialising in visual design from print, photography, film,  2D motion to branding & advertising.

His show reel is a very good example of showing your skills from the amazing editing in the show reel and the range of projects featured. He has labelled the projects in the show reel in the description of the video, being a total of 17 projects included, all ranging from short films to photography and graphic design and even motion graphics. Also, with the audio used in the show reel, it fits very well with the pace of how his projects are shown, which keeps peoples attention while watching.

What makes this a very effective show reel is the range of skills and variety of projects, which allows future employers to see their skills in a fast paced but very investing light. Just from the editing alone this show reel is a amazing example with the variety of skills shown on top of this, giving himself a great portfolio to be shown any future employers.

Another good example of a show reel is by a french editor names Benoit Leprestre, who in his show reel, shows his editing skills and projects he has been involved in, some of his qualifications as well as the software he uses. The music used in his show reel also fits the pace very well, along with the text used to speak directly to the viewer.

His show reel is a great example for a editor's portfolio, by including qualifications as well as software you use and even showing you are also capable of using camera's yourself. Even by including the types of projects your can work on and have worked on gives any future employers a better understanding of your skills. By having a show reel so high in quality gives yourself a great advantage when showing your portfolio to any future employers as it will show your skills and variety of projects in the best light possible.

Show Reel Plan -

For my own show reel, I wanted to include my logo at the start and the end of the show reel. My reasoning for this is, in the two examples I did not see a logo included in either of the two show reels. Personally, I think that by including your logo in your show reel makes it feel that little bit more professional, and can also allow people to know how to spot your work in the future if the logo is used in future projects. Also, I would like to maybe include some of the picture that I have taken and edited to give my show reel some more variety and not just all videos.

Due to all the COVID-19 restrictions since 2020, I have not been able to make many projects because of said restrictions and the 3 month period when we had to do our projects from home.

I gathered some feedback on my show reel and these are the responses I was given:

From the feedback I have gathered, I can see that people like how I included my logo in the show reel and also including all of my work. But, everyone said that the lack of text made the show reel feel boring and harder to engage with by not having anything to say what each project was about. For the improvements on my show reel, I will add more text to make it more engaging and informative as well as adding my Wix website URL at the end and also adding a couple of photos I have taken to give the show reel more variety.

This link is to my improved show reel, after taking all the feedback I was given into account. I added the text into parts of the show reel to make it more informative as was said in the feedback, and also added some photos I have taken at the end of the show reel. I think that with these small changes to the show reel, it has improved drastically to what it was before. I also added small transitions at the beginning and end of the show reel where my logo appears and disappears to make the cuts less noticeable.
